Its back!

In June, we said goodbye to one of the biggest bubble tea chains, Gong Cha. Franchisee Mr Rodney Tang announced that all the Gong Cha outlets island wide were going to be converted into home-grown brand Li Ho. The news received mixed reactions from Singaporeans and many scrambled to get a cup of their favourite drink just before the shops get converted. In fact, many braved the long queues at Gong Cha’s last store (was located at Marina Bay Sands) to get their very last cup of bubble tea.

6 months later, Gong Cha is finally back! Whether you are still contemplating on patronising the newly reopened chain, or if you are already in queue eagerly waiting for your turn or sipping on a cup of Gong Cha right now, we’re here to concoct 5 relatable lyrics for their return.

1.     I Miss You – Clean Bandit ft. Julia Michaels

I miss you, yeah, I miss you
I miss you, yeah, I miss you, oh, I do
I miss you, yeah, I miss you

Some of us can’t live without music, some of us can’t live without coffee and maybe some of you can’t live without Gong Cha? If Gong Cha was your go-to bubble tea chain, then this song would be most relatable.

2. Finally Here – Flo Rida

That day is finally here
That day is finally here
That day is finally here

When the newly built SingPost centre opened in October, rumours started surfacing that Gong Cha was going to make a return to Singapore. Things were confirmed when a shop was spotted with the brand’s posters all over the windows but we still had to wait a couple of months till the drinks were being served. No more waiting now (except for the extremely long queues)!

3. Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) – Backstreet Boys

Everybody
Rock your body
Everybody, rock your body right
Backstreet's Gong Cha’s back, alright

It is time to celebrate! Not only because the Holiday season is here, but also because Gong Cha is back. We’re sure we have all sent our pals or received articles about the chain’s return.

4. Worth It – Fifth Harmony

Give it to me I'm worth it, baby I'm worth it
Uh huh I'm worth it, gimme gimme I'm worth it
Give it to me I'm worth it, baby I'm worth it
Uh huh I'm worth it, gimme gimme I'm worth it

If you decided to brave the long snaking queues and make it all the way to the order counter, this is for you. Maybe this song went through your mind while waiting to collect your favourite cup of bubble tea? We definitely give you props for braving the crazy queues!

5. For The First Time In Forever – Walt Disney Records for Frozen

For the first time in forever
There'll be magic, there'll be fun

6 months could be “forever” to those hardcore Gong Cha patrons, and for the first time they’ll be able to get their favourite cup of bubble tea again. There was a lot of hype around the new opening and in fact queues started to form the day before the store’s opening.

Does this ring a bell?

On 1st December 2004, Singapore crowned our first ever Singapore Idol, Taufik Batisah. After rounds of competition, he beat Sylvester Sim to take home the prize.

Since then, local broadcaster Mediacorp ran another two seasons of the talent contest before putting an end to the era. 13 years later, we wonder what ever happened to some of these forgotten finalists.

Season 1

Taufik Batisah

Batisah has been active in the music industry throughout the years, putting out both English and Malay albums. In fact, his debut album Blessings still remains in the Singapore Book Of Records as the fastest selling English album.

Sylvester Sim

Sim made a switch after the show and worked on Chinese music and released his first album Take Flight in 2005. He was also supposed to fight Steven Lim in the Asia Fighting Championships this year in September, but later pulled out. The 34-year-old is currently a partner in SGEE Ventures, an events and exhibition and talent management company, and also heads the music team at Unplugged, a live music bar in Dempsey.

Olinda Cho

Cho not only stayed in the music line but also branched out to acting and started up her own company, Oli Mgmt. She flew Singapore’s flag up high when she represented our country in China Super Vocal and more recently in Sing! China as part of Jay Chou’s team.

Haneri aka Daphne Khoo

You might remember Haneri as Khoo, but today she prefers to be known as the former. Her journey hasn’t been the easiest after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer; thankfully she beat it in style, gained a new meaning in life and came back stronger than ever. She had a brief stint as a radio DJ with Power 98 in 2015/16. In June this year, she released her debut single Burning Up

Maia Lee

Feisty – as one would describe her. In 2015, Lee switched her focus to groom what she calls “Singapore’s youngest all-girl dance-pop group”, The Lovettes. The trio group consists of her daughter Julka and two of her friends.

Season 2

Hady Mirza

Mirza decided to leave the music industry a couple years ago to embark on his new business venture, Tempting Tempe. With his business at hand, he has no plans to return to singing.

Jonathan Leong

In 2010, Leong ventured into theatrical circus playing the lead role in Voyage De La Vie, a resident show at Resorts World Sentosa. In fact, he was the only Singaporean cast member in the production. A year later, Leong released his solo Chinese album, which he had his hands on for writing, production and arrangement. The 35-year-old has since deactivated his official website and Facebook page. His Instagram account is currently still active.

Joakim Gomez

Dubbed the Sanjaya Malakar of Singapore, Gomez’s charm won the hearts (and votes) of many fan girls despite receiving criticisms from the judges for his weak vocals. He has since stayed away from singing and have been a radio DJ on 987fm or one-half of “The Shock Circuit”. Soon, we’ll get to watch him act in a new series Trendsetters.

Paul Twohill

Twohill has since shed his “typical metal band member” look for a cleaner style today. Currently, he is a host on Clicknetwork (Singapore’s first ever YouTube channel to hit a million subscribers) on the show Wonderboys

Gayle Nerva

Nerva was only 17 when she was on Singapore Idol, besides making music she has also gone into art and acting. She occasionally releases new music on her YouTube channel. (https://www.youtube.com/user/iamgaylenerva/videos) You might remember seeing her in the long-form TV series Tanglin. She even got a shout out from Ellen and Oprah for her stunning sequin portraits.

Season 3

Tabitha Nauser

Nauser’s hunger for creating music never stopped even after her idol days. You might remember her representing Asia in the official theme song of the 2010 Youth Olympics Games. (https://youtu.be/lfXOysuoUoI) Fast forward to 2016, she put out her first ever-single Bulletproof and is currently a full-time recording artist.

Sezairi Sezali

A year after winning the 3rd season of the talent contest, Sezali released his debut album Take Two and his first single Broken, which later became one of the highest-ranking Asian songs of the year. In 2014, Sezali was signed to Sony Music Singapore and in July this year, he released his retro tune 70’s

Sylvia Ratonel

Ratonel is the embodiment of girl power! She became the only ever female Singapore Idol finalist and later became the first-ever Singaporean celebrity ambassador for Maybelline New York. She has since stayed out of the limelight in recent years.

Jonathan Cheok

After idol, Cheok made a career switch and decided to pursue YouTube. He is more famously known as cheokboardstudios. The channel aims to entertain with their comedic skits and boasts over 220 thousand subscribers currently.

Duane Ho

If you were at Jessie J’s concert in Singapore last year, you might be familiar with Ho. The British pop star picked Ho out of the crowd and they performed a stunning duet together. He is currently working at A*STAR as a Marketing Assistant/ Graphic Designer.

Their idol days might be long gone, some of them stayed on to pursue music while others made a career switch. Who knows what they’ll get up to in the future, but one thing is for sure, we’ll keep you updated!

All I want is to fly with you …

Zac Efron and Zendaya will definitely be partaking in a lot of aerial stunts in their new movie The Greatest Showman, out in December. Zendaya’s previous music release was a collab with Prince Royce earlier this year, while Zac has pretty much not touched music since the days of Hairspray and High School Musical. It might have been awhile since they have both released new music, but this is all about to change with this movie!

The Greatest Showman’s soundtrack features 11 stunning tunes from the movie, including a very special romantic duet by Zac and Zendaya titled Rewrite The Stars. Rewrite The Stars took us back to the days of High School Musical, where we saw Troy and Gabriella expressing their feelings for each other through song. We have been swooning over all these romantic duets, but this tops the list. Zac and Zendaya’s duet has got our hearts fluttering and minds racing hoping that they will live happily ever after.

Get ready for some feels, listen here and watch Zendaya’s exclusive trailer below.

“It’s time!”

One Direction’s Irish crooner Niall Horan has always been known as the happy-go-lucky-smiley one, but his debut album, Flicker, shows us a whole different side. Talks about his debut album started a year ago, when he became the first member of One Direction to release solo material (apart from Zayn). Now, it is finally here!

Niall wrote on Twitter that it was the first time he properly poured out his emotions onto a record. The theme of love is prevalent throughout the album, which he has never really addressed in the past. As we know, Niall has been rather private about his personal life and relationships over the years. However, he sings about chasing the one that got away in songs like Flicker and Too Much To Ask. Also, just like any other young adult learning about love, Niall sings about the experiential process in tracks like Paper Houses and You and Me. Another interesting track would be On My Own – a singlehood anthem – where he sings about not needing anyone and just having fun on his own.

On the topic of romance, we looked through all 13 songs and picked out the top 5 most romantic lines. Man, he is good with his words…

1. Seeing Blind

"Oh, no I, you're too good to be all mine
Now I'm looking in your eyes
Oh, I must be seeing blind"

2. Since We’re Alone

"Since we're alone
Yeah, you can show me your heart
If you put it all in my hand
No, I swear
No, I won't break it apart"

3. Fire Away

"Darling, you don't have to hold it
You don't have to be afraid
You can go ahead and unload it
'Cause you know it'll be okay"

4. You And Me

When I look down the line
At the man I wanna be
I've always known from the start
That it ends with you and me

5. This Town

Because if the whole world was watching I’d still dance with you
Drive highways and byways to be there with you
Over and over the only truth
Everything comes back to you

Along with the album, Apple Music released a behind-the-scenes documentary following Niall on his album-making journey. Revisiting this short Q&A, he finally revealed that Flicker was the song that made a room full of grown men cry. The album title track really showed his vulnerable side and it gave us goosebumps.

Overall, Niall stayed true to himself and his musical influences – pop, folk and a little rock. We’re looking forward to an Asian tour, maybe?

Backstreet Boys will be performing at the National Stadium this weekend in conjunction with the 2017 WTA finals. In fact, Singapore is extremely lucky as this show is their only stop in Asia before they return to Las Vegas for their residency show.

If you are attending the show and it has been a while since you listened to their tunes, we have got you covered. We sieved through all 8 BSB albums and curated these top 7 throwback bangers.

This is just a teaser of what’s to come!

1.     Larger Than Life

2.     The One

3.     Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely

4.     As Long As You Love Me

5.     Shape Of My Heart

6.     I Want It That Way

7.     Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)

If these have hit you with major nostalgia feels, we wish you all the best this Saturday!

Oh boy, it has been awhile…

The last time Taylor Swift performed at a concert was well over eight months ago in Houston at the pre-Superbowl concert. In August, she shocked the world with a surprise comeback track Look What You Made Me Do and ...Ready For It. We surely were not ready for that!

Next month, Taylor will release her comeback album Reputation. Even though she has not revealed any headline tour for the upcoming album, she has announced her participation in a couple of the Christmas shows happening in the USA later this year.

Before she returns to the stage, let us look back at 5 things we missed about her performing live.

1.     Countless Outfit Changes – She just looks stunning in every outfit she puts in, HOW!

2.     Insane Stage Set Ups – From flying above the audience to probably the biggest elevated platform ever

3.     Amazing Crowds – The crowds just seem to get larger and larger every tour

4.     Surprise Guests – During her 1989 tour, Taylor invited special guests to join her on stage each night

5.     Of Course, Her Vocals!! – Need we say more?

We are very excited for what’s to come! Are you?

You might remember him?

It has been a while since we have heard new music from Australian singer songwriter Cody Simpson. But now he has surprised the world with not just new music but also a new band – Cody Simpson and The Tide!

Cody took to Facebook to explain how this whole project came about; perhaps their song can provide a getaway from our hectic lives. Just put on the EP and imagine yourself chilling on the beach, no stressful work or school weeks.

In September 2016, Niall Horan became the first out of the other One Direction boys to release a solo single, This Town.

Originally, Niall decided to release the song just to let fans know that he was still making music and not just playing golf everyday. However, the success of his first song led him to actively hit the studio.

Towards the end of 2016, there were rumours that Niall would be releasing his debut solo album in the summer of 2017. But as of now he has pushed it back to give himself more time to perfect his craft. Whenever he is ready, we are ready!

Here's what we know of the album so far!

1.     We can expect his album to be released at the end of fall or early winter.

2.     The artists Niall grew up listening to heavily influenced the album. For example Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles and Damien Rice.

3.     Slow Hands is said to be the most out-there song on the album.

4.     Niall claims that On The Loose is a good summary of how his album will sound like.

5.     He has got a duet with country singer Maren Morris titled Seeing Blind.

6.     Niall created a song so emotional that it made a room full of grown men cry.

7.     He wrote one of his favourite tracks while sitting on his sofa watching football.

8.     His upcoming tour Flicker Session 2017 is most likely named after a song title from the album.
