While ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr is getting busy lately leading up to the scheduled release of his solo debut album The Messenger early next year, he hasn’t forgotten his roots. He appeared on Dermot O’Leary’s BBC Radio 2 and revived an old Smith’s classic Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want amidst performing some solo new cuts.
The number of bands attempting to cover this song is good as infinite and it is almost always “incomparable to Morrissey’s”, but we can’t say the same for Marr’s. No doubts no one can ever come close to Morrissey’s perfect take on the song and express yearning quite like he did, but to hear Marr revive it (careful not to say it’s a cover) is a trip of nostalgia enough to make you want to rake up all of the band’s old records and spin them all day.
