London singer-songwriter Natasha Khan, better known as Bat For Lashes is making an anticipated comeback with a new album The Haunted Man, scheduled to arrive on 15 October this year. With the announcement, she lets us have a taste of the new album by unveiling a new track, Laura.
Laura is a sparse combination of Khan’s delicate voice, the piano and the somber horn. The way she leaps through octaves and sings “Your name is tattooed on every boy’s skin / Oh Laura, you’re more than a superstar” is, for the lack of a better description, extremely haunting.
It is a melancholic piano ballad, which is more so and poignant with its heart-clenching music video. The video shows Khan singing to the camera and making her way to the theatre stage where she dances with a man; a little Black Swan-ish I must say.
I find it incredibly refreshing to hear a strong and confident Khan as compared to her previous tracks on Fur and Gold, which was softer and in a way, elusive. The shift in sound in Laura definitely came as a fabulous surprise and I can’t wait for the rest of the album to see how much her sounds have changed!
